It’s never too early to discover STEM
Many Blue Cheese members support Jr. FLL teams in the area by acting as student mentors under the guidance of adults.
FIRST LEGO League Jr. is a program created for elementary school students aged 6-10 in which a team solves a real-world challenge by applying research and creativity to the problem. The program serves as an introduction into the world of FIRST and familiarizes members with the values of critical thinking, innovation, and teamwork. Teams create a LEGO® model that uses a motor and a simple machine as well as a presentation exhibiting what they have learned over the course of the season. FIRST LEGO® League Jr. judges, watch the teams’ presentations before they compete. Blue Cheese hosts a Jr. FLL Expo annually at our school. This year's challenge is called CREATURE CRAZE(sm).
How can my child join a Jr. FLL team?
Two avenues are available to find teams for your child to join. One is registering with FIRST TeamUps, which connects you with others looking for teams or team members. You can also start your own team; all skill levels are welcomed and needed. No experience is required and you are never alone. Learn more about the process on this page. Once you register for the competition season, you are given Challenge documents, coaches guide, access to private forums, and access to the Jr.FLL Online Showcase as well as other important season materials.
FIRST LEGO League is a program created to inspire fourth through eighth graders in science, technology, engineering, and math. The students gain hands-on experience as a team in two ways: by designing a robot and programming it to automatically carry out missions on a table and by researching a problem and crafting a creative solution. FLL offers a higher level of practical application of engineering concepts than Jr. FLL.
Many members of Blue Cheese have "graduated" from one of the FLL teams in the Richmond area. As a team, we make it a priority to spread the ideals of FIRST throughout our community through mentorship and team formation as well as hosting an annual FLL/FLLJr. Tournament at Deep Run High School.

Check out the FLL league resource page, which connects you with others looking for teams or team members and provides information on starting your own team. The 2016-17 challenge is called Animal Allies (sm). Blue Cheese is proud to mentor terrific FLL teams like the RVA LEGO Lizards.
Blue Cheese also offers support to local FLL and FLL Jr. teams in the form of kickoff events and summer camps that teach the basics of the LEGO robotics platform. Check out our calendar to see when we are holding one of our events.
