Outreach ‑ School

Team 1086 actively recruits students at Deep Run High School to become more interested in robotics. In September, we place posters all over school inviting students to our team recruitment Ice Cream Social. We demonstrate our robot at lunch time, Back to School Night, the Curriculum Fair, Freshmen Orientation, the Center for Information Technology Open House, and Fee Night. This year 23% of our team is freshmen.

Our school recognizes the robotics team as part of the sports community. Our robot participates pep rallies, exposing the whole student body and staff to robotics. Team 1086 marches in school homecoming parade every year with team members riding Segways and the Coach "The Big Cheese" riding in the Cheese Mobile, a yellow Corvette. Team members hand out beads and candy to bystanders along the parade route exposing thousands in the community to robotics. We have won "Most Spirited" award for our participation in the parade.

FIRST is built into the curriculum at our school with almost 200 students in 8 courses exposed to robotics. Our physics and chemistry classes study motion, electric motors and pneumatics in relation of our robot. Our engineering and technical classes range from beginning engineering to advanced, with students working with hands-on real life engineering problems. Students learn how to use Inventor and AUTOCAD software to draw our robot parts. They also launch eggs for trajectory calculations, prototype solutions for the FRC game and use the VEX Robotics kits donated by Team 1086 for classroom curriculum.

Team 1086 holds high standards for their team members. Students are required to maintain a C or better in all their classes to participate in team events. We offer tutoring to teammates who might be struggling as part of our No Cheese Head Left Behind program.

E·Cycle is our new electronic recycling fundraiser. The team collects electronic devices from the community that work, do not work, are used or unused. The team then turns the devices in to Second Solutions where the products are recycled. We invite everyone to join us in being environmentally responsible. For collections, call (804) 690-4040.
