Breakaway is the FRC game that debuted on January 9, 2010. The game is played by launching Size 5 soccer balls into the opposing alliance's goals, and is played on a 27x54-foot field. This year, a new robot vision system was released that allows teams to target goals automatically.

One notable difference this year is the introduction of elevation and suspension as scoring elements. Elevation occurs when a robot hangs from the tower in the middle of the field, and will score an alliance two points. Suspension occurs when a robot hangs from another robot which is elevated from the tower, and will score an alliance three points.
